In Rhode Island, Latino businesses flourishing

For Franchesca Navedo, flower arranging started as a hobby, then became a fledgling new business in the basement of her North Providence home.

Navedo is one of the state's growing community of Latino business owners. According to a new study, this group grew by 280 percent between 1997 and 2012.

In Providence, 28 percent of all local firms were Latino-owned in 2012, and in the same year, Rhode Island had the highest percentage of Latino-owned businesses in New England, according to the study, prepared by the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University.
